I like to think that Delia is actually Silver's mom that she had with Giovanni but left him a while after and left Silver with Giovanni.

A little while later, Delia met Ash's dad and had Ash and it went from there.

Because in Japan, most fathers work long hours and barely see their family. This is reflected in a lot of Japanese media; even Mother/EarthBound has you phoning your dad to save. It's a relatable experience for the Japanese, so it makes it's way into a lot of their media.

Gen 4 mentions you're dad's a trainer.
I thought Gen 6 mentioned something or other, I know your mum was a racer.

I also assume it's probably because it's not all that uncommon for Japanese men who work a standard company job to basically never see their families. Watch a documentary on that shit, it's actually pretty sad.

Pokemon 4Ever, ending spoilers.
A character named "Sam" is introduced, a younger version of Samuel Oak(professor), travels to Ash's time with Celebi. After a camp night, I believe Ash showed his PokeDex and his usage to Pokeballs to Sam, and he then remade the devices in the distance future as Oak. He even knows Ash, and the name of Ash's "friend" but refuses to tell him.
