Vanilla doesn't excite you anymore, and you've tried the standard kinks so you have to resort to more extreme stuff, and the only reason it turns you on is because it's something you haven't experienced before and is possibly difficult to find/indulge in and thus even more rewarding/exciting.
Robin Williams had a bit on this with someone putting a sparkler in their ass, doing a handstand, singing the national anthem and then shoving a finger up his ass when he says he's close. That's about as close to accurate as it gets. The older you are, the crazier things you have to do to bust a nut.
