Delphox should have been fire/fairy.

Why wouldn't you have one of the starters gain a fairy typing if you're trying to introduce a new type?

For the same reason none of the Gen II starters are Steel or Dark.
Delphox being Fairy would also ruin the Fighting,Dark,Psychic theme

Feraligatr should have been Water/Dark and Typhlosion should have been Fire/Steel

Why wouldn't you have one of the starters gain a dark and steel typing if you're trying to introduce a new type?

The Gen 6 starters would make more sense as Grass/Steel, Fire/Fairy, and Water/Fighting. And you'd get a reverse secondary triangle.
