>>27844513For me, part of it is replayability -- it gives you a reason to open the game after credits roll. It's actual postgame content that you can come back and play whenever you want for as long as you want, and unlike the Hax Maison, it's actually varied in the experience you will have.
Additionally, it's actually challenging, getting all the medals was a real GOAL to work on after the game wraps up and a worthy finish for the game itself. A lot of players first learned strategy beyond "four attacking moves, all of the same type" in the Frontier. You could also get points to get huge Pokedolls for your Secret Base (in addition to lots of other useful things) which was another thing to do.
The island itself is also pretty big and even has a cave full of Smeargle on it (which honestly for breeders is fantastic if you need something really obscure on anything in its egg groups.)
Basically the reason people cared so much was because it was genuine post-game content that gave you hours of additional gameplay and goals to work towards that actually took time and effort because getting some of the Medals is legitimately difficult. Which is part of why people have so much problem with XY, it's literally just Nothing Island and a Single Building's worth of postgame.
If Alola has Sevii Islands-type postgame exploration and Battle Facilities that aren't just the Maison (Inverse battle facility WHEN) it will be a long way to being a really fantastic game on that merit alone. Especially if the PWT comes back.
