In any case, it's not that James has a stronger bond necessarily, it's that he has a different kind of bond with his Pokemon. I'd say both Ash's and James' bonds are equally valid, and that James could be a damn fine trainer if he wasn't being held back by Jessie and Meowth.

In general, I'd agree.

Ash and Pikachu have been together for too long to discount, and Ash slipped Chikorita the D on the sly, so they are basically life partners, but James has built an incredible relationship with, what is it, 10 pokemon, now? (Growlie, Weezing, Victorybell, Cacnea, Chimecho, Carnivine, Mime Jr., Can't remember BW, and Inkay. Plus Meowth.

I'd say James is better at forming a connection with Pokemon (he caught most of his with just some food and kind words, no battle required), but Ash is better at bringing out the best in his team. Most of James' stagnate, though obviously thats due to the nature of the show.

I hope his Cacnea comes back one day.

Bottom one was from the episode where his chikorita evolved into a bayleef.

Team rocket caught chikorita and was about to actually get away with it until ash slid down a hill side to be beaten with a bunch of hits by Arbor and weezing, thus making chikorita evolve into bayleef

Yeah, but James has now fairly consistently won over all his pokemon just by being nice to them.

I don't think he'd ever match Ash as a battler, but he'd probably be a top tier breeder. Or even whatever it was Cilan does.

Ash normally battles his pokemon to catch them. Not saying he's not nice to them, but James gets most of his roster just by talking to them and sometimes snacks. No one else pulls that off, at least not as consistently.

Hawlucha was less about fighting to catch but more on proving to him that he is worthy to follow, and even then he had doubts on coming until Machamp assured him that he will take his place in the forest.

To be fair, they got rid of weezing and arbok by sending them to protect their kinsmen, weaker koffing and ekans as James, Jessie, and Meowth tried to hold off a tyrantitar and it's owner, a better poacher than they were.
