Colosseum and Gale of Darkness were neat, but they barely had any functionality with the handhelds. They were their own thing. Battle Revolution? Functional, but pathetic.
Sure, games like BW2 or Platinum wouldn't have had much use for a Gym Leader Tower, but that kind of thing would benefit most handheld Pokemon games. Even without it, things like the minigames, interactive trainer's school, and the tournament cups are always welcome. And who's to say they couldn't devise more new things? Now we have doubles, triples, rotation, inverse battles, and a whole bunch of other modes that can be played with. Hell, 1vs5 is a thing.
