I don't care about these characters anymore.
There's no reason for anyone to continue watching a show if they believe that there's not going to be some kind of cathartic closure at some point. If the writers have the audience believe that after 20 years, Ash DOES have a chance at winning, and then decide to have him lose anyways, then it's reasonable to assume Ash will never accomplice his goal, no matter how many years, trials and tribulations, and thus render those years of effort meaningless.
Simply put, if they keep pulling this shit time after time then there's no reason for anyone to continue watching it. Even little kids who just started on X&Y will feel jipped having watched this show and knowing it won't ever reach a satisfying conclusion, based solely on the fact it's been happening for kids watching the show for 20 years now.
Considering there's no league or gyms in Alola, it's reasonable to assume this was Ash's last chance at a victory. I'm not even a fan of X&Y and I can see why people are angry.
