Charizard X and Y are the natural evolution of a Charizard, like Mega Blastoise and Mega Venusaur.
Charmander goes from lizard to flying lizard as much as he goes from fire lizard to a dragon-looking fire lizard.

X evolves towards the dragon part, Y towards the flying part.
Everything in Y is an upgrade to Charizard in the direction of the Charmeleon->Charizard evolution: 1 more horn, 2 more wings, bigger wings.
X is the hidden part of the Charmander line, going to black like Shiny Charizard and getting a blue flame like the Dragon moves that Charmander can learn. It's also a fully upgraded Charizard but in a different direction.

I prefer X more, but both have reasons to exist.

Y is what Charizard had to evolve design and lore wise.
X is another possible evolution that is also what we always wanted: a dragon Charizard. It's way more likable, even I like it more and I have pretty strange tastes.

Y is the one that kids dreamed of when they heard about Pokegods and fourth stage evolutions hiding in R/B. It looks like something someone would innocently fake back in the day. These kids also thought the charizard card's overkill fire move was the coolest thing ever.

X is when those kids grew a little order but were still hanging in by Gen 3. Now extremely bitter about Charizard not having a dragon type. Worshiping the shiny version. Trying to get by with belly drum sets.

From a design stand point Y makes more sense as his mega, since all others are just the same Poke with added shit.

Is Mega X the only mega that recolors the Pokemon? Because I think it is.

They probably were afraid X wasn't going to be as famous as Charizard because it's more different, so they marketed him harder. Early products, like MD that was already in development showcase Y because they were sure that Charizard lover would have recognised hime. Now with Alain winning the Kalos League they're sure Charizard X is as famous as the old one.

Nah, they were sure that it was going to be marketable because it was exactly what the fans wanted. That's probably why Sakurai picked it for Smash too which was in development long before X and Y were finalized.

Marketing version exclusives. They had to use a popular pokemon for that, so Charizard and Mewtwo get an X and Y version.
