The issue here is that the HMs became increasingly pointless over the years to a point it's not that unlikely they'll get replaced.
>Gym puzzles.In a way, yes. The trials seem to be expansions of the gym puzzles. But not being restricted to inside a gym and having the totem fights in it already makes it different enough to be it's own thing.
