Mewtwo and Lucario are confirmed canon.

Mewtwo outright being part of the original series as a cameo based on what happens in his movie.

Ash has stated he has met Lucario before in his encounter with Maylene's Lucario.

Ash's ability to use aura is nodded at during the episode with Aura Sphere Riolu, since he fills in the role of the kid who could sense aura, and was friends with that Riolu in the second Ranger game.

I don't know. That part was a turning point for him. As he said, after he defeated all of those megas, he was already pretty much at the top like he wanted. But he was too focused on becoming stronger, and because of that, and the argument he had with Manon, her Chespin got into a coma.

He felt responsible for it, he didn't even want to see Manon after that. He got angry at himself, and he went from "I have to become stronger" to "I have to maker her happy again".
