His motivation only became "muh smile" in act IV. Before it was literally "become stronger", and that was basically what caused Manon to be sad in the first place.
Anyway, Alain is a good kid, but he's being softly manipulated by Flare. Despite that I'm still not sure he is completely unaware of some of the stuff they're up to.
