Arguable that ash could still have won with some of his better mons, also arguable that ash is better than he was when tobias beat him. I think it is pretty apparent though that Tobias is single-handedly the best trainer put in the anime.

This. What I don't understand is what was their point with him. Sure, he existed to cockblock Ash, but rivals usually have ulterior motives. The anime and movies always taught us that Legendaries needed to be free, and shouldn't be captured. Just compare who else tried to capture legendaries for their own interest. Did Ash lose to a legit bad guy who got away scott-free?

I don't value the anime and don't watch it, but I remember being hopeful for Ash winning the league in Johto and Hoenn, after that it became obvious where the series was headed. I feel a mix of pity and scorn for the people still watching, still hoping for anything resembling a coherent plot and characterization.
