Tobias was bullshit, but at least it made Ash look strong as fuck by taking down two legendaries with his B-Team and really hammered home how far he came.
Alan just makes it feel like all of Ash's efforts were fucking pointless since even Greninja's perfect synchro form did worse vs Alan than his imperfect form did fifteen eps earlier, and most of ash's team did jack shit during the finals, thereby undermining their importance up to that point.
To top it all off, Alan was setup as his rival, meaning Ash not only failed in his attempt to win the league, he failed at his most immediate challenge of beating his rival for a third fucking time even after training for that purpose.
