I'm not even mad about Ash losing, just how poorly written it was.

it should have been Alain's Charizard as the only thing on his team, soloing Ash on its own. Tobias-style, only with one mon, and it would fit with how he's been just defeating everybody with Charizard alone.

I feel you OP.

The new anime had a change of writers.
Ash was written to be more competent than ever before.
They broke a lot of status quo in this series, such as giving him a long term crush, no bullshit badge wins etc.
Ash breezed thru the region without big problems, even lecturing his inferior rival all the way thru.
With unevolved pokemon he beat multiple megas at a disadvantage. Then he evolved tem all besides pikachu.
Got given special snowflake powers that aren't in the game yet.
Then he fought against THE Champion and basically won, being disqualified because his special powers broke, flinching him out of the match at the last moment.
They set up the whole arc about Ash almost beating the guy he'll face later in the league, falling short by a tiny bit only because his powers with Greninja weren't perfected.
Water Naruto and Ash then had a whole 30+ episode arc about special once in an era powers which they finally perfect.
Cue to league, they don't even show first five battles because Ash basically steamrolls thru everything with one or two pokemon.
Then in the finals, Pikachu wrecks half of the enemy's team, as a level 100 pokemon in the games.
Final episode is three to two in Ash's advantage.
Name of the finale is named Kalos League Victory.
The trailer for the last episode showed Greninja/Ash going even further beyond perfect super power preforming some unforeseen DBZ hyper move that no one with a sense of narrative storytelling would ever have believed was going to literally do nothing.

The battle itself was underwhelming. Both parts, but especially the second one. Ash's water Greninja was 1 hit KO'd by a fire attack after a pathetically short battle he utterly dominated. It's a clear case of someone above deciding Ash can't win after all and then a hack director fucking up at actually directing the episode.

Basically, character arcs and plot themes (which were never preset there in earlier leagues) got thrown into a dumpster for a forced loss to maintain the status quo. The whole thing screams a top writer or a committee pushed this on the series rather than where the series was naturally going.
This was even worse than in gen 4 where they gave his enemy two legendary pokemon. It was bullshit, but there was no way Ash would win against those. Here, he should've won the battle. Even some of the anime staff tweeted how they didn't like the decision to make him lose this time.

There was no hype for the last pokemon league, nor did anyone return back to the series at the league point because Black/White was utter shit. Back then it was obvious that Ash would lose to the same people who hyped this one up. This series did things better and different than before, so word of mouth spread from the few that watched pokemon continuously to others. By the league, with all earlier mentioned stuff and heavy Japanese marketing "WILL SATOSHI WIN THE LEAGUE THIS TIME?" (something that was never present before), people got hyped.

I'm sure there's some stuff missing and you could add more reasons if you wanted. But, of course, it's all about lol fans are so dumb ridicule from the people who didn't watch shit, but came to feel smug.

Then Greninja hits Charizard X with a bunch of moves, but at the end X is standing there without a care in the world.

Fuck Alain, fuck Pokemon Anime, fuck everyone who thinks it's ok.

Ash could become champion and STILL be a main character - it's not like he'll win one league and suddenly call it quits.
