I thought Misty was canonically only traveling with Ash because it was easier than making major life decisions. When Ash appears to die, Misty is more concerned about the prospect of having to face reality since she can no longer tag along on Ash's journey.

Its kind of weird Advanceshipping is still so popular when:

1. Contestshipping was the canon ship of AG

2. Serena's crush is canon with the current audience, Misty's with genwunners, and Dawn had the closest friendship with him

3. Its been 10 years since AG ended and May left

Debatable, but ship wars are super pointless anyways.

I like the ship, and I still do. ORAS's Redesign of May also gave it a bit of a push.

It was the first instance of Ash being a mature person and being a mentor of sorts. And while they didn't fully explore this relationship between the two, there are still elements of this (such as May's contest battles suffering because as several people point out, she's learning a more traditional battle oriented style from Ash than what works better for contests). Also the last episode of AG completed their arc very well with a nice chill episode.
