I don't think Meowth would be as iconic as it is now if it weren't for anime Team Rocket Meowth. That could be why Meowth was chosen for an Alolan form, as a way to appeal to the fans like they did with Alolan Raichu.

I only watched the first season when I was a kid, but I remember Team Rocket Meowth being hilarious.
