I usually avoid the rat along with most early route trash but he's pretty strong and learns quite a few powerful moves quickly.

I really only caught and used the Rat line to fill up the dex back in the day.

When RBY was rereleased on VC I decided to use it until I got to the end of the gyms. Rat bro was a lot of fun. As far as the route 1 trashmon goes it was surprisingly satisfying. Hyper Fang can be brutal in battle.
