I stopped watching the anime when johto began simply because I understood that things would never change. Ash is not really a character. He's a vessel to help the viewer discover the Pokemon world nothing more. He will always abandon his so called friends/pokemon when the next generation arrives. Team lolcket will always try to capture Pikachu. He'll always collect the badges of each region, only to lose the league. But that's alright because he learned "insert hypocritical moral about friendship here". Then watch him repat the same things again and again in the next region but hey there are loads of new Pokemon!
In contrast, the other characters you cited are given far more opportunity for growth and have clear goals.
