No matter where I venture on the intraspace, when there's a fave starter poll, little shrew dude wins it. I thought Charmander, Torchic, and Froakie were more popular?

And I like Typhlo quite a bit too. I still like super sand monkey quite a bit though and that one is good.

It's a bland, inoffensive Pokemon that appeals to nostalgiafags. Of course the lowest common denominator will vote for it. These same people probably also praise HG/SS as the best games in the series.

Nope, best game goes to Platinum.
HGSS was the Pokemon Go of its time; a shallow game made purely to pander to nostalgia. It didn't fix the inherent flaws of the G/S (poor level scaling, poor pokemon variety, poor post-game content), and instead just pushed dumb gimmicks like Following Pokemon, the Pokewalker, and the Pokeathlon.
