Alolan starters get alternate evos, thus every other starter gets alternate evos eventually down the line. This is to make up for the new variant forms.

Or we get Alolan form starters from past gens. Eventually every starter has a variant.

Or we get none, and the starters get no new forms whatsoever, despite the most popular Pokemon.
