Okay. to replace the gyms, the game has the Island Trials. Each island of the Alola region has a number of specialist, known as Trial Captains, so far we only know four, and each Captain presents you with trials to undergo, it will apparently involve numerous different things, from gathering quests, to tests of knowledge, possibly mini games and quizes, who knows, and most likely Pokemon battles. Once you clear the trials, you face off against a Totem Pokemon, which is a Pokemon that possesses an aura that boosts it's stats and can call on other Pokemon to fight alongside it. Now, once you've cleared all the trials, I assume at least, you will face the Kahunas of each island, which will most likely be the E4 equivalent. Once you have done all that, supposedly you will be the Island Trial Champion.
