What's up with people saying that regular Ninetales should be part ghost type instead of fairy type? It's not dead, associated with dead things, or possessed, so why should it be?

Ghosts are also associated with curses and such, which would fit for Ninetales. Although the older fairy lore often features fairies' curses as well, cause they were dicks in most stories.

Ghost Pokemon don't necessarily have to be undead/posessed, it can simply mean that they wield spiritual/mystic power. Alolan Marowak is ghost because of its "strong family bond", and Sensu Oricorio simply posesses some sort of spiritual power. Honestly, only around half of Ghost-types are either literal ghosts or posessed objects.

Don't know about the sand line, but vulpx and nine tales are not alola natives. They were introduced and adapted to living in the mountains to avoid confrontation. It's in the official Pokemon website

The vast majority of Ghosts are actual ghosts or spirits possessing things, Alola is weird since most of its Ghosts don't seem to have a particular reason to be Ghost type. Except the Sandygast line.
