It started out as /vp/, then people flocked to the idea of being called /tr/ and the mods changed the header to /tr/ and it stuck for a long time, but the board link has always been 4chan.org/vp/

Reminder that we wanted to be kicked out of /v/ as much as /v/ wanted to kick us out.
Pokémon Generals were being shiposted to death by outsiders because we had too many of them and too often. So no one was enjoying anything.

Then /v/ found more videogames to complain about and asked m00t to create /vg/ as a macro board for unwanted generals. /v/ stayed with shiposting, piccolo edits and LOL comics only.

Team Rocket. We were living the early HGSS days and lots of older fans had just returned to the franchise and Pokémon was suddenly popular again in the gaming community and fans on 4chan wanted to be associated with Team Rocket.

Team Rocket. It was back when 4chan was still kinda seen as this "underworld" full of bullies and evil.
Also we never had a name to go by with /vp/ (like /tg/ has fa/tg/uy, /v/ has /v/irgin, etc). /vp/oreons was proposed for a while but it doesn't sound right.

Thats why we liked /tr/ so much, we ended up calling ourselves /tr/ainers. Good days. The board has never been as alive as the first months of its creation. It used to be a fast board

What I never understood is why /vp/ isn't listed with /v/ and all its other relatives. Sure /vp/ isn't only about video games, but we're still a /v/ offshoot.

/vr/ is an example of a very successful split though. I think good splits come when the intention is to encourage discussion of a niche topic which gets squashed on a bigger board. A bad split is when you create a containment board for a certain type of discussion. I'd say /vp/ is halfway between the two, one one hand /v/ wanted to kick out the endless generals, on the other discussion was stifled as it was contained to a few massive threads.
