So when the inevitable middle stages for the starters gets revealed, and look nothing like the concept art with 'Mallow' in it; will they be confirmed fake, or will it prove split evolution stages?

If they show off only one middle stage evolution for each starter, then they obviously branch at stage 3. I can't see them branching at stage 2 and not showing off all of them at once.

In which case, the stage 2 evolutions have to look such that they could evolve into both stage 3 branches. They would look at least a little liked the leaked finals.
