What's the in universe explanation as to why 18 starter Pokemon seemingly have no home region/don't exist in the wild?

Also I had an OC Donut steal idea when I was a kid. I drew a region map, and made three post-game islands called Startura Islands.

They obviously exist in the wild to their native region because you often see other trainers use them throughout the games, however they are extremely rare seeing as only Professors distribute them

They're just rare pokemon.

Incoming headcanon: Most people don't get starters this rare, normally its pidgeys and ratattas for most kids. But on the day you go and pick up yours, you either get lucky or the Prof gives you something a little special because you're helping them out with something (depending on the game) and you get a rare one.

On a related note, one of the things I liked best in Platinum was seeing other trainers, and a gym leader and E4 on top of that using the starters at various degrees of evolution. Helped them seem rare but not special snowflake protag only rare.

actually. One thing that you have to respect about /vp/:

you can never be sure it's bait. Every single pokemon has a die hard fan. people will hate on charizard, pikachu, etc.

but yeah XY starters looked great, Popplio and Rowlet too

This is entirely my own Head Canon but here goes:

Starter Pokemon are almost entirely extinct in the wild due to a mix of habitat loss and over-hunting/capturing and if not they're exceedingly rare otherwise; only living in the most geographically secluded of habitats.

Most if not all the Starter Pokemon you see people use were bred in captivity either by private breeders or by public academic facilities who's job it is to keep them from going extinct as well as to provide them to sponsored/licensed pokemon trainers such as our playable characters.

I found a Palkia and a Giratina, both at level 47 in Diamond in that road.
It joined my team of a level 47 Dialga, a 52 Dragonite, and a level 54 Tyranitar that knew Crabhammer.
That E4 was so cash.

Same reason you don't see blue pokemon wild in red or vice versa. YOU don't. It's your journey and in your journey you never come across them. Others do though.

They're probably fairly rare hence why he kept them. He also gives you one because you're helping him with the Pokedex, so they're not something that gets handed out like candy.
