I rented the first Pokémon movie every week back in the day. Mew was my favourite character and I also liked how it could learn any move.

I don't know.
You can show me some examples, and I'll have positive/neutral/negative opinions on them, but I can't rank any of them as the absolute best.
I usually just keep whichever ones will serve a purpose for my team, and only replace one if I notice I'm not using it, which is biased in favor of pokémon that are obtainable earlier in any given game.

It's different for everyone, probably. I was pretty undecided in the beginning. Kingler was the shit in gen 1. Then I found misdreavus in gen 2.

But then gardevoir happened and I've had a stable fave for years.

If that doesn't help than you're going to have to go through the long way and play the games and test out a chunk of pokemon. I suggest playing a game that has pokemonamie or doing a monotype challenge (start with your favourite type).
