My question is, is the 3ds XL actually a improvement over the other two available models?

Get a New 3DS you dingus, SM are guaranteed to run better on n3DS than regular ones where it will be frame drop festival.

I have a 2ds now, but I don't really want to dish out $200+ for a system if the quality of gameplay isn't going to improve that much and if the NX is coming out in a few months and will have backwards compatibility.

I've already pre-ordered Moon so I have a few months to decide.
