Can you mix energy cards from different sets? I've noticed Generations have stripes all through their energy cards, while Fates Collide and Steam Siege look normal.

although im new to the pokemon tcg most card games that have a rotation and not a banlist allow you to use energies or manas from any set as long as they are not special or have any random extra bonuses to them like the first release of dark and steel energies in which they were both special

There's no reason they wouldn't allow you to do so but would you really want mix matched energy cards? It just wouldn't look good imo desu

I know this is off the 'Energy' topic, but I'm also new to the game.

Can anyone who knows the TCG tell me if this particular Charizard EX can evolve into this particular M Charizard EX?

The Charizard EX in question is the promo that came with the Charizard EX box, and the M Charizard EX came in one of the Generations packs in said box...

Only time you can't if it's non-existing special energy. But you can use Double Colorless Energy from the first gen if you still have them.

Yes, only the name matters. As long as it's "Charizard EX" it can evolve into "M Charizard EX".

Charizard ex, however, cannot.

If a Special Energy is in rotation, you can use it. For regular energy cards (the ones in your pic), you can use essentially all of them.

If there's a card from an older set with the same name and same text as the newer reprints, then you can still use it I believe (for example, using a full art copy of N in replacement of the Fates Collide one, even though it's from Noble Victories).

Any cards with the same name and effect are interchangeable and are immune from the effects of rotation. This includes Energy cards.

Officially, league owners can be pissy about things like Professor Sycamore vs Proessor Oak, 2016 Potion vs 1999 Potion etc., but anything identical is undeniably fine.

You're allowed to use things like 1999 Potion, so long as you provide a reference. This doesn't apply to Ace Specs, but DOES apply to using the old Pokemon Center trainer card as a Stadium, for whatever reason. (unless they've since changed it)

What do you mean reference? I thought all trainer cards got rotated out with their sets. (Like the upcoming rotation of phantom forces)

For example, Base Set Potion (heal 20 damage) and the current Potion (heal 30 damage) are considered to be different prints of the same card. As long as you have a modern Potion outside of your deck that you can use to confirm the modern text, you're allowed to run 4 Base Potion in your deck and use them as if they were modern Potion.

For a while, you were able to use the old base Pokemon Center and pretend it was the Stadium version, but they put an end to that.
