Gen I's direction was originality. Gen III's was exoticness. Gen IV's was shock value (in a good way). Gen V's was distinction. Gen VI's was streamlined-ness.
Gen II's direction in terms of design was... dull, uninspired. They shot for it to serve as an extension of Gen I and succeeded in that regard with some infrequent standout designs, but otherwise Gen II doesn't have its own identity.
I wish it was comprised more of Pokemon like Porygon2, Heracross, Miltank, Tyranitar, and Blissey.
