It even says in Latias dex entry in RSE they gather in hordes. So it's canon to both the games and the anime. The only true one of a kind Legendary are the Creation Trio.

Yeah, if we're getting into headcanon here I personally think the original Mewtwo eventually figures out how to make a female counterpart using that remnants of the data and they eventually create a populous species, although its one as rare as other legendaries, such as Mew.
Either that or the Mewtwo in the Mega Evolution special is female, and its those two that breed to create the species.

Almost definitely singular. Different ones appeared in Hoopa movie, but those could have just been dragged from a different dimension or something, every other appearence of them otherwise indicates singular. Hell, when Groudon and Kyogre appeared in Ranger it was implied they were the same ones that fought in Emerald.

The only unique legendaries are Palkia, Dialga, Arceus, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Celebi, Darkrai, Cresselia.

Mewtwo is not unique this has been explained in the anime before, there were some failed experiments or clones.

Mew is not unique either.

Deoxys is not unique, it's a virus from space.

And so on.

Back in season one, when Ash and co. arrive in Viridian City after having beatin Blaine, Ash states that it had been a full year since he was last in Viridian. But he's still 10.

We can assume that every region he passes through to compete in the Pokemon League takes up the better part of a year, at least. And yet, in BW001, he's still referred to as 10 years old.

Then there's also legendaries that don't really deserve to be called legendaries because of their lore or lack thereof (Heatran, Phione, Genesect, hell even Deoxys shouldn't really be one) or mons that are strong and rare enough that using them is much more of a "dick move" than using most legends (Mega Mom, Mega Lucario, most pseudos, Aegislash, swaggerwave Klefki, etc)

and imagine life was like 'Anything Goes'

and everyone's just using dominant strategy because they're so scared of losing, so instead of using the pokemon they raised, everyone uses Darkrai, the Primal Legendaries, Arceus, Mega Rayquaza, and...for the hell of it, let's say Mewtwo.

Yeah as I said, it entirely depends on who we're talking about.

It's true that capturing a Xerneas, Giratina, Ho-Oh or whatever seems out of place and ridiculous, but you wouldn't be disrupting shit by capturing a Heatran, Deoxys, Genesect, Lati@s, or even Victini (it's meant to be captured since it's said to bring victory to its trainer)

So, some legendaries are here to do important stuff and maintain balance, but I think others can be captured without it seeming too far-fetched.

If you're playing the main games competitively, sure, using legendaries is nothing special since there are stronger pokemon depending on the format you're playing. In the anime at least, legendaries are a bigger deal than a Garchomp so someone fighting with a Darkrai and a Latios seems like overpowered overkill bullshit. But if it was something like Pokken, a Darkrai is an even match for a Braixen for example, so it doesn't really matter. Still I agree entirely with the sentiment that it feels weird and kinda bad to capture some legendaries that have an important role for the world.

The Japanese line can mean a few things. The phrase used was "Tomodachi kinenbi", where Tomodachi means 'friend' and Kinenbi is a day of observance (usually used to refer to anniversaries). Without context, it sounds like he's saying that it's the anniversary of when they met.

The missing context is that the Pikachu shorts always incorporate whatever the current Japanese ED song is. In this case, his line was leading into the song, which was called "Tomodachi Kinenbi". The song is about how every day is an excuse to celebrate Friend's Day, because someone in the world is meeting their new best friend today.

That's why other translations refer to the phrase as "Friendship Memorial Day" rather than "the anniversary of the day when we became friends".

Isn't there a guide book for publishing Pokemon in the west that makes a distinction between legendary and mythical Pokemon? The same one that talks about not showing things that could raise questions about the food chain, like hot dogs.

I just use Legendary cause they're fun to use. I don't care for the "they're to powerfull" thing, they deserve to be used since they are still pokemon in the end. Plus, not everything is as powerfull as Mega Ray, done pretty mediocre to even bad like the Lake Trio.

I know the discussion originally started with the anime, but I was talking about those who get mad at people for using legendaries in the main games (be it in the story or on the battle spot)
While it may be overkill, unrealistic (lore-wise) and ruins the fun to challenge the league with a box legend, it's not always the case for other legends
