>>28117787I thought I was the only one. I mean, I'm all for feminine looking designs, I don't really mind them, heck, Meganium was arguably one of the first cutesy final evo starters that might pander to little girls and what not and he was a total bro despite his freaking adorable flower mane. And yet, my opinion doesn't fare off too much from yours actually.
I guess I just like my pokemon animalesque, although they're not forced to be realistically so. When I first saw Popplio, I was expecting him to... well, stay a sea lion. Popplio looked a bit bulky to me too, so I just assumed he'd grow big. His chest seemed bigger compared to the rest of his body.
I mean. Poppmaid is still technically a sea lion, but at the same time, it looks like it's trying its best not to look like one. If the selkie concept is true to this design, it just proves my point even more since the selkie is, essentially, a seal becoming a human. Poppmaid still resembles a sea lion somewhat, but at the same time, I assume it's trying to give us the idea of shedding its old self, which is unsettling, but might make more sense with the Fairy type.
And it has so many "accessories", it just doesn't bode well with me. If she looked a bit simpler in design, maybe, maybe I'd give her a chance, but it's so weird seeing a pokemon with so many elements that look unnatural to her. The veils legitimately give her a actual maid look, it's hard not to realize this.
But when you google shit like mermaid or selkie... Can you really see one with as many clothing details to them as Poppmaid does? The starfish here at least makes sense since mermaids do tend to happen to have them. You could argue the bubble tiara also making sense here. But the rest doesn't really mingle all that well with the mermaid/selkie concept.
