Yes. If it was still Gardevoir his team would be too much like Diantha's. Besides, Mega gallade gives Wally his own distinct style of starting out as a wussy little girly-boy and becoming badass, but still having some elements of his girly-wussy past. Gardevoir just wouldn't quite reflect that the same way.

I think that it made more sense stylistically? Not that Gardevoir can't be badass or strong, but I like that this frail, sickly kid grows up with an equally kinda tiny Pokemon and it ends up being this really strong, gallant Pokemon that protects him.
