So why is pic related a Fire/Ghost type? I get it's that it's a nod to the Marowak ghost from genwun. But lore wise, why are Marowaks from Alola ghosts?

I think the implication is, Marowak have a natural tendency to develop supernatural powers (ie justifying the Ghost element) so long as they grow up and thrive together as a group.

Something about socializing elicites that development. Otherwise, they default to Ground type.

Because the designers didn't feel like giving it ghost type in the first game. This really isn't a mystery.

it being ghost type has nothing to do with rby, it has to do with the sixth sense alolan marowak has developed to survive as a group in a region where there's a lot of grass pokemon

It's a spirit medium. The Marowak in Alola had to work in close groups to survive, and this caused them to evolve stronger spiritual senses, which gives them Ghost-type powers.

Gen I Marowak wasn't a ghost type, it was a literal ghost
It was dead, team rocket killed her
Then everyone wante a mega marowak with parental bond, or a pure ghost

Ghost Pokemon aren't dead. We can literally hatch them from eggs. They may be born of grudges and stuff like that in the lore, but they aren't ghosts in the traditional sense. It's more that they have spirit or supernatural properities reminiscent of ghosts. Some are more spirit-like (Mismagius, Gengar), and some have physical bodies (Sableye, Trevenant).

It's just a type change they developed in response to being threatened by the grass types in the area.

The dead Marowak in Red & Blue made it clear that there's a massive difference between a Ghost-typed Pokemon, and an actual ghost.

Alolan Marowak didn't die, they just unlocked spiritual powers through living together as a tribe. Or maybe it's more to do with the properties of the region itself, and this is just the explanation the locals believe.

the plot shown in the game is canon, but the actual gameplay of each game isn't. How else would it make sense that every time someone plays a game their teams are different, for example, if I play xy and the mc picks chespin, and you play xy and the mc picks froakie, which one is canon?

Yes, but Dark is strong against certain other pokemon, where as Normal is strong against *nothing*. Gaining the Dark type makes Meowth a better predator because it can now hurt other types more effectively, as well as gaining STAB on some sneaky moves. A couple of weaknesses gained doesn't hurt enough to counteract the extra combat effectiveness.

It's literally explained on the website. It sets it's bone on fire by flicking it against it's skull (which explains the mark) to fight off Grass pokemon that it's normally weak to and because they live so closely together for safety they gain a sort of sixth sense/spiritual power. That's enough to alter it to Ghost/Fire.

Ground type carrying around bones makes sense because bones are absorbed into the earth. It doesn't make sense for a fire type to roll around carrying bones so they added ghost type.

I think it was the other way around. Blue flame is a staple of ghosts in Japan, so when they tried to come up with ways to make the ghost type visible, they added blue flames.
