Pokemon is full of in-lore transformations of self, like Magikarp becoming an incredibly powerful beast after living for so long as a useless fish, or the ugly Feebas becoming a beautiful serpent. Even if it's not a full friendship evolution, Mimikyu just screams a pokemon with a evolution that progresses it's own personal story. I mean the Mimikyu's entire reason, like you said, for disguising itself as Pikachu is so it can be loved, so if it's captured, and bonds deeply with it's trainer, it would finally feel love.
