At least Lana's trial is to defeat some wild Pokemon but we dont even know if its strong.

I dont get why are they call trials to be honest. If those were some mini tasks to get some items that would be cool but that is replacing gym battle and the only thing thats left in the trial is the Totem battle which might be cool but we'll see if there's any challnege in it.
The site suggests there will be no battle with captains and even the trailers showed us trial tasks, battles with totems, battle with Kahuna but no captain battle.

It seems they have type specialities because they guard a totem of that type (for example Mallow surely guards Lurantis)
