What would have been lost is its design origin. It's not just a cat with psychic abilities, it's based on a nekomata. Basically house cats that lived long enough in Japan were said to grow a split tail, become wild, and gain high magical abilities. People in Japan used to cut the tails off cats to prevent this.
It's why Espeon has a forked tail, but the Espurr line plays the myth straight. Espurr has one tail that splits into two on evolution, and they stand on two legs which the nekomata do.
