the real question is why were there 3 ground/rock families in one generation? the only other rock-types were two rock/water fossils and a rock/flying fossil. Why not make onix pure rock to differentiate it from brock's geodude?

You know for all the types that get questioned how come nobody ever questions why we have a ground and a rock type? Ive sort of been able to determine a difference between the two but it'd make a lot more sense if they were just one type.

Because they behave differently. Rock is intentionally a more archaic type, tied to fossils and having low accuracy moves.

There are many pure Ground types, and almost no pure Rock types.

It's a theme.

Like, first type has 1.5 STAB and secondary has 1.3 STAB. or the same with ressistances.

Maybe secondary types shouldn't give you immunities, but just ressistances/weaknesses.

I don't know, it would be fun to shake things, instead of "ITS THE SAME"

I like the idea of hidden types, that don't grant weaknesses, but would offer an even smaller stab than the second type. no clue what it would due to balance though. .

Again, the order doesn't affect weakness, resistances and immunity or even STAB, and its fine the way it is.

But, we could have abilities and moves that act different according the user primary type.

Or even, there is a rumor cat that chances its secondary type to match its father primary when get by breed. In its case the order does matter.

A Pokémon's first (or only) type is representative of its body and anatomy. Normal type are land animals, Water are animals that dwell in the water, Ground are animals that dwell underground, Bug are arthropods, Rock are rock creatures, Fire are creatures with flames as part of their anatomy, Flying are creatures with wings (not birds, which are classed as Normal type) etc.

A second type is something that's a major aspect of them, but not their *core* anatomy. That's why we can have stuff like Normal/Fire and have it still make sense. It's an important distinction.

Only the primary type matters for Super Effective/Not Very Effective calc in Gen 1.

This is why Geodude and Onix can be hit by Electric-type attacks in Gen 1(RBGY) but Rhyhorn/Rhydon cannot.

I'm surprised by how many people do not realize this.

It's visual only in gen 1 dumpass. Everything has the regular type effectiveness but the text is displayed wrong with dual types.

4 pure fires, 4 pure electrics. blah blah. My coutns my off, but w.e. Gen 1 is stale as fuck when it comes to type diversity. So many same combos or lack of dual typing over and over. If gen 1 truly were to get remade they'd ideally fix that cause it was utterly bland.

It usually determines which type gets the axe if there's a change. Example: Rotom is Electric/Ghost. The appliances cause Ghost to be lost.

I think Steelix, Alolan Marowak, Altaria, and Fletchinder are the only cases where it's the primary type that changes.

Steelix probably kept Ground over Rock to prevent a 4x Fighting-type weakness at a time when Steel was meant to be the new best defensive type.

Swablu turns from a cute little cloud bird into a coatl (small, feathered dragon with a long and flowing tail) or something similar.

It's still a cloud bird and it still flies so it loses Normal in favor of keeping Flying while becoming a Dragon.

Fletchinder is too boring for me to care.

Marowak is my favorite because it seems to take inspiration from voodoo as well as fire-dancing, on top of its roots in the original games as the first "ghost" the player ever encounters.

The primary type is what the Pokémon IS, the secondary is what the Pokémon can do/utilize/has additionally/where it lives/all those other kinds of extra details.

There is actually now a real function for this:

Primary types are usually not affected by "change of types" moves / abilities, secondary gets replaced temporarily.

So it does matter.

Not sure if youre joking, but yes, Sableye isnt a ghost at all. It's a real, living, regular animal. But it's thirst for jewels means it adapted to be able to move through solid ground at will to find them without going through the effort of digging.

Onix is made out of rock, but has a horn that draws in electricity and makes it immune to it. Also it burrows.

Rhydon actually lives perpetually underground, and is almost a part of the ground as it bathes in lava or something, iirc, so it has some rocky armor/texture to its body but its not really fully rock

One of the leaks said that they were introducing a cat that was Normal, and it's secondary type was decided by the father's primary type when you bred it. If true, that's the only reason why. We don't have a pokemon that's primarily Flying besides Tornadus.

Some ghost pokemon are only considered ghosts because they're ghostlike, Gastly and its evos fall into this category. They're gaseous and behave like ghosts but they're not any sort of spirit whereas other ghost pokemon are, like yamask.

The first type is usually more prominent
like Jellicent's Water/Ghost typing because it's more obvious as a jellyfish, a water-dwelling creature, aquatic. While it's ghost-typing is a bit obscure, being based on it's minor ability to absorb life-force and being based on yokai.
Or Starmie being more obvious as a starfish, an aquatic creature instead of a psi/mystical being.

Like you're a grass type, and you're weak to ice. The 2nd type flying adds to this weakness, but only to a X3. Grass is weak to bug, and the 2nd type flying is not. It would reduce the effectiveness to 1.5X dmg. Similar the rock weakness of flying would only add 1.5X effectiveness not a full on X2. The fighting dmg would have been 3/4 dmg and not 1/2.

It got too confusing and very few types were getting advantages from the various degrees of dmg so the concept was dropped.

There's still a lot of Pokemon that fit air as an element and yet, flying type. Ah well. Altaria makes just as much if not more sense as flying/dragon as Noivern does. Still, I've grown to accept these things as things that make Pokemon unique.

I've always though of sound as a subset of air, as far as elements go, and flying is the closest we have to an air element. Plus it's a bat so it should be secondary dragon. The only other thing that encompasses sound is normal and its decidedly pretty abnormal.

Sableye is more than likely based on the Hopkinsville Goblins so yeah it's not quite a ghost. I think had it been released later it might have been a dark/fairy.
