He has a tragic backstory, so much goddamn spotlight, a speshul bond-based transformation that amps his power up to ridiculous levels, amongst other shit I can't rememeber right now. Sure, Mary Sues can do things like lose battles occasionally, but that doesn't usually make them any less of a shithive of poor writing. They took something legitimately popular and started shilling it to ridiculous levels, even worse that Lucario and possibly Charizard.
