>>28195784They reeeally werent. They required time and effort from the art team to create new evolutions to preexisting pokemon most of which, the final evolution was already thought out so theyjust added spikes and horns because there is no reasonable way to add on to most final evolution pokemon. Then there is the fact that once we had them, you only saw them once per battle, and you could only use one on your team, and many of the megas were unused and worthless.
They were only made for pokemon that the design team could think of ideas for, people often say how megas could help balance older pokemon, but then pokemon like flygon never got a mega because design team couldnt think of an idea for it.
Then you had the stones, in order to mega evolve you HAD to have the stone for that specific pokemon, for this new snorlax and raichu we saw in the trailer, you will still be able to use the basic Z moves with them over their custom Z moves if you desire or if you just dont have their z move yet.
Megas were not well thought out, they were a quick decision made by the team, they realized it was bad, and abandoned pokemon Z and moved on to the next region and generation.
Megas were suppose to "bring light to old, overlooked mons"
now alola forms are doing just that with sandscrew and marowak and more to come.
Megas were suppose to be a boost a pokemons stats to make them more viable. Even most pokemon taht got a mega and were used were over statted pokemon that were already strong like salamance, garchomp, mewtwo, blaziken.
Z moves instead give the pokemon a strong 1 time burst move that requires some actual thought as to when you will use it.
Everything that megas were set out to be has been replaced with new features. That are easy to manage, better thought out, and easier to make for the design team.
Anyone who thinks megas are coming back are delusional. The features we are seeing for this game fill the role megas were suppose to fill.
