I saw the first few in theaters when they came out, and even then I thought they weren't good. To be fair, they're not any worse than the normal episodes (which, as I said, I enjoy) but you'd expect something more from a movie. So I guess it's not right to say they're all "bad," but none of them are particularly "good" as a cinematic experience. As the tv-movies that they've been released as outside of Japan for a while now, they're perfectly adequate.

I want to assume that Ash was just an actor involved in the movies.
Though the most aesthetically pleasing ones are any movie that takes place before Sinnoh, the art wasn't oversaturated and Veronica Taylor's old voice just makes it god-tier.

The only ones I rememeber well enough are the first 3 and the Lucario one.

Any others I remember details of, they're not for good reasons, like the Deoxys/Rayquaza mobie because of the fucking blocks.

But the games hadn't even come out, yet!

Diamond and Pearl weren't released until September of 2006 in Japan. The Lucario movie came out in July of 2005. An entire year between when the pokemon was seen and when it could be acquired in a game.

You sir are spot on about the aesthetics. They definitely seem to have taken a dive in more pleasing quality. I find a lot of more modern fully computer animated animes have this problem.

That's not to say that computer animation is what led to the change, but something in the way of attention to design, because I know some of those earlier ones definitely had it too.

I'm not criticizing, it wasn't unreasonable at the time. It's just interesting how unique a situation it was, not even knowing if a featured Pokemon was legendary or not.

And the Regis are definitely, officially legendaries, so it's not like there weren't any in that movie.

Never seen the sub, but with the dubs I disliked the Giratina movie and thought that the Arceus movie was okay.
Really, Shaymin is an annoying brat with an annoying voice and Arceus's voice does NOT fit at all.
Also, Arceus's movie expects you to have watched Darkrai's and Giratina's.

I thought the Arceus movie was alright. Giratina I remember being pretty stupid. But if I recall, the first three D/P movies all kind of tie together in at least some half-assed way, so you should probably watch Giratina first, even if it is pretty stupid.

They were billed as a trilogy from the start. They wanted to try a bit of long form story telling with them because the DP legendaries were all really linked together.

6 and 7 are decent in my opinion, but those were a part of my early childhood before my father died.
The rest like Hoopa or Darkrai are eh.
But whenever I see any legendary Pokémon from the first 7 movies, I feel happy.
That's why Hoopa is eh instead of shit for me.
Lugia, Rayquaza, Latios, Latias, even Groudon.
Also the ending of Heroes can be seen in so many ways.
All of which make you cry.

Honestly? A gripe I have with most of the movies is how little involve Ash actualy battling with his own Pokemon, especially in the more climactic part.

Yeah, I get that they're supposed to be jmainly pushing the Legendaries, but it wouldn't hurt for Ash to actually do more battling or for it to come down to him battling with the antagonist.
