>>28227145There both pests. Rats are rats and eat everything as per usual. Mongoose are just an out of control pest because someone couldn't figure out rats are nocturnal and mongooses are diurnal. I blame the sugar plantations.
Now we have a day and night shift of animals eating the native plants and animals, so we have to build fences to keep them both out. Yes I see the irony from this memetastic series of events.
Mongoose are everywhere. They breed well like all the other small pest mammals. Fortunately there isn't rabies in Hawaii. I'd hate to deal with that.
Kauai doesn't have any so they're trying to quarantine the island from them. It's one of the last non fenced in areas where we still have ground nesting geese, so it'd be bad if they got there and started breeding.
That said, I guess they're kinda cute. Cuter than rats anyways.
