Some people are capable of appreciating the various advancements in mechanics, engine, and style of the games over time, and as a side effect can't look back on the Gen I games without thinking 'hey, those feel really clunky and old these days'.
Gen I allowed for the series to gain its roots. It started the concept of Pokemon, and caused an entire genre to bloom, giving inspiration to many other series and franchises to come. The Pokemon are memorable and were the ones to introduce millions of people to the franchise.
However, the fact remains that Red and Blue are a product of their time and technological limitations. In comparison to the majority of newer games, they are lacking in the polish that the franchise would soon have.
You can't say that just because someone started with ___ they can't realize something bad about it. You can do that. It's not impossible.
