Alright, you say rock smash is smashing a rock, and the rock pieces is what damages the pokemon.
If that's the case, why does it break rocks out of battle, rock pieces can't shatter a full rock.
You're also supposed to take in the context of the move typing to understand what it is.
There are also move descriptions in every game.

That's only in smash.
In the games the animation just represent the rock shattering force and not a real rock.
