I recently got into it and I'm quite enjoying it. I almost finished the Emerald chapter and can't wait for the DP chapter.

It's all right. I found Ruby/Sapphire a bit boring towards the end. Emerald is cool outside the MC, he's a fucking odd and his character design is stupid. Haven't gone beyond that.

Red/Yellow (all out) > Emerald > Green > Blue >> Sapphire > Gold > Silver > Ruby > Crystal as trainers.

Yes.
Also, read the arc. It's not bad. Then right after is Diamond and Pearl, which is terribly underrated as an arc. It has some of the best character interactions and group dynamics of the series.

"Edgy" moments are very few and far between. For the most part, that's not why people like this thing. It's got actual character development, and said characters can actually accomplish things. This allows for the reader to not feel like they're wasting their time rooting for the protagonists, even though they don't always succeed. There isn't this almost clinical denial of success that the anime seems to revel in.

This.

Actually having the Gym Leaders and E4 do things other than "I'm just going to sit in this Gym and wait for challengers" was great.

The manga does have some unfixable weaknesses, though. Story arcs based on compilation versions of the games have typically veered towards the bad end of the spectrum. Kusaka and Yamamoto must be relieved to know that they wouldn't have to do anymore of that past Platinum.

It has impact on Emerald arc, and the Emerald arc resolves the FRLG arc's cliffhanger.
Otherwise, it's not really necessary reading for the other arcs, other than ORAS of course. They try to keep the arcs self-contained.

I already knew that Green showing up in Kalos had probably to do with that reference in X&Y, but didn't expected now Red and Blue too.

So, they're going to merge both stories? ORAS had already a lot of stuff related to the Kalos games after all.

I love Electric Tale of Pikachu and the early Pokemon Adventures manga.

Things go downhill once Yellow is introduced. By the time Lugia and gen II roll around it loses almost all of its charm. I didn't like the gen III comics at all, but it's a matter of taste. I haven't read past that.
