What's the point of having both types?
The only reason I can imagine is so that fossils can have Rock Typing to represent the having been fossilized, but that's all kinds of stupid anyway.

Rock Pokémon are solid and sturdy, designed to be Pokémon related with minerals.
Ground Pokémon are Pokémon that living in areas with shortages of plants as deserts or underground, or are related somehow to the sand.

I cannot imagine Sudowoodo or Gigalith being ground-type, or Excadrill or Digglet being rock-type.

Chaning up things now, after 30 years of becoming used to it, would be pretty damn weird, yeah. But especially looking at Gen1, when the decision was made, an "Earth" type would cover all bases and if there had never been a split in the first place, nobody would question Onix, Diglett, Golem and Sandshrew all having the Earth type.

I just wonder what drove them to splitting it up, especially when they ended up treating Rock like the redheaded stepchild.

Rock and Ground should both be combined and called "Earth" type
Flying should be renamed to "Wind" or "Air"
Dark and Ghost should be combined and called "Shadow" type
Remove fairies
Make a new "Light" type. Basically the "good" type, opposite of Shadow (most fairies would become this)
Remove dragons. ie, Dragonite line would become Water/Light,
Get rid of Normies (pic related)

Ghost and dark type combining to become 'shadow' type
Dark type is actually the evil type, not all ghosts are evil

he got rid of a fighting weakness and a ghost immunity but for all intensive purposes it's the normal type
