Gen 1 and 2 Monsters were guilty of being palette swaps, like Black Diablos, Red Khezu, Blue Kut Ku, Gold/Silver Raths, etc
Gen 3 and up subspecies are often more creative, and a result of a monster being in a new environment than their native one, and often have different elemental properties, like Sand Barioth, Snow Barroth, Tigerstripe Zamtrios, Ash Kecha, etc
