Nintendo is making a new side game, think PMD, ranger, etc.
Now what should it be
Hard mode: not just pokemon the mmo

Challenge accepted.

An L.A. Noir style mystery game.
No violence or direct conflict.
Interview trainers, gym leaders, e4, etc.
Have a single pokemon along with you to help with certain aspects of investigation (Growlithe to sniff out clues, mudkip cleans scenes to find hidden clues, Pikachu activates hidden areas thru electricity).

End goal: Find the location, origin, weaknesses and strengths of a region/game exclusive, legendary Mon for you to capture/befriend.

The Ol' Shiyamalan Twist - You're helping Red the whole time to overcome a corrupt organization trying to harness the same legendary.

Ok, ok... What if you adapt the Minecraft model?

You're a Day Care owner. Based on the mons dropped off to your daycare, you go out and collect certain objects (Magnets and wiring and such for electric, charcoal and magma for fire, fresh spring water and morning dew for water) in order to hatch better mons in a certain type, and you get to keep some of your own from a "litter" to cross-breed with trainer mons for your collection.

End Game: Breed X amount of different mons.

A legit fighting game.
In 2D with legit moves like cqf, qcb, and more variety of pokemon, at least 3 per type. Not hard but with a complex system mechanics to make it competitive.

I could see them doing it since Animal Crossing has gotten quite big over the last few years and will likely continue to be successful as long as Nintendo lets it do so. It has an upcoming mobile game (which whether or not it's good will likely entice some casual players) and will likely get an installment on the Nintendo NX. (On the idea of a NX game, addition to it being an obvious move, it's been stated that the mobile title will work with another Animal Crossing title [or title in general, but even if that was what they said I'm sure it's likely Animal Crossing]. The title could be New Leaf after the update, but I feel like it's going to be something bigger. There will be a dedicated Nintendo Direct in November as well.)
