Get a DS Emulator and play Platinum, HG/SS, B/W, and B2/W2. You should play all the DS games (Sans DP) at some point anyways, they're probably the highlight of the series.

If you're emulating then start with Pokemon Emerald or FireRed/LeafGreen, since they're easier to run well.

You could start with XY because they're easier but you'll potentially throw yourself off the series if you can't stand dumb kids saying kiddie shit pretending they're intelligent individuals.

Play any game besides the Red/Blue/Yellow or Gold/Silver/Crystal. Those games are still fun and I'd recommend you them sometime, they're not ideal if you want to get a better feel for what Pokemon is now.

Also, I'd stay away from X and Y and Diamond and Pearl. If you want a gen IV game, play Platinum and if you want a gen VII game, play Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.

Anything with a physical/special attack split for individual moves, so gen 4 and onward.

It's probably the most jarring aspect that has changed the games over the years. Besides, there's literally nothing wrong with starting with the latest games, even though they will be dated in two months.

If you want comfy RPG feels gen 1 and gen 2 games are great.

and save the remakes for last, for when you've run out of games to play. Alternatively, you can play FR/LG after Emerald, HG/SS after Platinum and ORAS after X or Y if you don't want the order to influence how much you like those either

Save anything released post X and Y for until you've had your fill with vintage Pokémon. Mega evos and Fairy change the game up a fair bit.
