These phases are 100% cosmetic and only show up during a cutscene during the story or as an animation for using a certain attack, having no in-game relevance just like Xerneas's formes.

No it doesn't. It says the forms (as in a synonym to "appearance", not the gameplay mechanic) they take is called a "Phase", which seems like a specific name to differentiate them from actual formes.

Using "the website that gets shit wrong all the time" as a source is really stupid. Unless you consider Mega Mewtwo Y and Kyurem Black/White as three completely new Pokemon, Vivillion's formes as a huge game-changing secret, or Raichu to have actually been changed into its alolan form thanks to pancakes(which aren't even mentioned in the Japanese site, apparently)
