Hey /vp/

my brother just lent me his 3DS indefinitely, so I'm looking to pick up a pokemon game

I havent played one since ruby, and currently going through soul silver, which he had.

So which game from DS or 3DS is the first game I should pick up? I was thinking Black or White, but do you guys have a better idea?

Also, which is better to pick up, black or white, or are they pretty much the same?

Pretty much the same. B/W might be difficult for you to stomach if you count on pokémon you recognize since they'll only use gen V pokémon until you beat the E4. B2W2 change this and add a very sizeable postgame, perhaps best-in-franchise.

And yes, they're pretty much interchangeable between B/W.

Gen V is a perfect place to start if you're trying to get back into the series.

Gen IV is good, but its hard to recommend as it has a lot of reasons people dropped around Diamond/pearl. Platinum is ultimately great, but i'd reccomend going back to it. HGSS is good nostalgia fanservice for gen 2, but mediocre as a game itself.

B/W is the one instance where it feels like you're playing a new game, not a continuation of the series. It's literally a soft-reboot of the series, in the way that Gen V has NO gen 1-4 pokemon until postgame. which actually encourages ou to go out and find new mons to work with, which felt great rather then relying on the same team over and over.

B/W2 is a direct SEQUEL to B/W. Takes place 2 years after the events in the story, an rebalances everything like emerald to R/S. They are considered among the best pokemon games out there due to a HUGE amount of postgame, and a great adventure. IMO B/W has a better story though

X/Y are mediocre as heck. Short, unmemorable, and no post game outside one interesting fetchquest. Severely lacking in content, good for one playthrough.

ORAS are better but Emerald still trumps them in every way shape and form.

Although I believe XY is inferior in terms of story and content, it feels like a balance patch because it adds things to help the player out so they can get the Pokémon they want more easily.
